Exploring Napa Valley: A Wine Lover's Paradise
Nestled within the picturesque embrace of California's Napa Valley lies an oenological haven, where rolling vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, and the air is imbued with the aroma of ripening grapes. Known worldwide for its exceptional terroir and renowned wineries, Napa Valley stands as a testament to the artistry of winemaking, attracting connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike to its sun-kissed landscapes.
Nurturing Roots, Cultivating Tradition: The Family Story of Spottswoode Estate
Established in 1882, Spottswoode Estate is steeped in history and tradition, its legacy woven into the very fabric of Napa Valley's viticultural tapestry. The iconic Victorian home depicted on our wine label harkens back to a bygone era, evoking the grace and elegance of yesteryears. Originally christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910, the estate found new custodians in Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. It was Mary who released Spottswoode's inaugural Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, a poignant homage to the estate's century-long journey.
Spottswoode Estate stands as a pioneer in sustainable viticulture, embracing organic farming practices since 1985 and earning California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) certification in 1992. With a steadfast commitment to biodynamic principles, their vineyard thrives as a harmonious ecosystem, where every vine is nurtured to express its fullest potential.
Meet Beth Weber Novak - President & CEO
In 1987, Beth Weber Novak embarked on a journey alongside her mother, Mary Novak, becoming the first second-generation family member to actively guide Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery. Over nearly four decades, Beth has played a key role in establishing Spottswoode as one of the world’s most highly regarded winegrowing sites and one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wineries. She has also emerged as a leader in the Napa Valley community, advocating for the wine industry and championing social and environmental causes close to her heart.
Growing up surrounded by the vineyards of Napa Valley after moving there with her parents in 1972, Beth’s childhood chores included tasks like suckering the vines and cleaning out the emitters. Inspired by a year studying in Europe, she pursued a career in wine after earning a degree in economics from UCLA. Joining a San Francisco-based wine brokerage representing esteemed clients like Caymus, Joseph Phelps, and Pine Ridge, Beth's path eventually led her back to Spottswoode, where her role quickly evolved from part-time assistance to full-time dedication. She spearheaded significant initiatives such as acquiring the historic adjacent Kraft property to expand the estate, overseeing replanting in response to phylloxera, and leading the vineyard to achieve CCOF organic certification in 1992. Today, Beth sees herself as a steward of her family’s wine-growing legacy, ensuring that each vintage of Spottswoode Estate Cabernet reflects the values and traditions passed down through three generations.
